vigil

By Moris Panych

Kemp, a self-centred loner, is summoned to the deathbed of an aunt he hasn't seen for decades. She's in no hurry to dies, however, and during his long - and impatient - vigil, Kemp reveals his unhappy past and unpromising future, while pondering ways to help her shuffle off her mortal coil. Gradually they build a connection that transcends misanthropy, isolation and musings on mortality, until a revelation forces them to reassess their relationship. Alternately irreverent and poignant, this dark comedy about death and the bond greater than blood appears wickedly funny on the surface, but underneath is a moving tale of love.

From one of Canada's most celebrated playwrights comes Vigil, a brilliantly dark meditation on intimacy and death, which the New York Times called 'a small gem'. Presented by international collective Spirithouse Theatre Company, Vigil is a black comedy that juxtaposes the morbid and the farcical, the outrageous and the heart-rending in a story that unfolds piece by piece, set against a surreal backdrop of hairbrushes, homemade jumpers and butterscotch pudding.
